In Collaboration / Support of Buddhist Prison Ministry
Introduction to Buddhism Study Group
Six Week Session, April 16 — May 21 | Thursday Evening : 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm | Online Only
Facilitated by Suzanne Lucas
BPM’s first workbook for incarcerated learners has received tremendous interest and popularity—both inside correctional facilities and among people “on the outside.” This 12-lesson course explores the essential foundations of Buddhism, including the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, Karma, the Wheel of Life and Death, and more.
This study group is ideal for anyone who is “Buddhist curious,” as well as for seasoned practitioners who would like to revisit the fundamentals and strengthen their understanding and practice. Studying the “basics” of Buddhism is always meaningful. Just like a house, when the foundation is strong, it can continue to support us—both in who we are and in how our growing realization can benefit others during these challenging times.
Rather than a lecture-style class, this gathering is designed as a collaborative study group, offering a comfortable and supportive space to explore the foundational teachings of Buddhism together. Each session will focus on chapters from An Introduction to Buddhism Workbook, written by Rev. Susan Shannon. The workbook presents Buddhist teachings through an interfaith lens and uses clear, accessible language originally developed for incarcerated learners—making it especially approachable for those new to Buddhism.
Each week will include:
A brief guided meditation
A review of the week’s topic
Group discussion of the workbook’s reflection and integration questions
Together, these elements are intended to deepen both your relationship to the Dharma and your connection with fellow participants.
